Nominate Shokay for 1.5 million dollars!

Shokay is participating in the Member's Project of American Express. Our project name is called "Luxury yak fiber = new income for Tibetan herders" and with your support it could get up to 1.5 million funding from American Express, so please nominate us! Go to
http://www.membersproject.com/project/view/5QWZGV and sign up as guest if you are not an AMEX member and vote for Luxury yak fiber = new income for Tibetan herders

Members Project is an exciting initiative that brings people together to make a difference in the world. It's simple. People go online to share ideas for projects — and ultimately vote on which projects will share $2.5 million in funding from American Express. In 2007, members Project provided clean drinking water to children all across Africa. There are a lot of interesting development projects on there to peruse!

Shokay Fall/Winter '06 Pre-Launch - We are official!

Dear Friends,

We are proud to announce the pre-launch of Shokay, luxury yak fiber brought to you from the
heights of the Himalayas. Our website is up and running, ready for your perusal and purchasing
at www.shokay.com. Keep the winter weather at bay with one of our scarves, or accent your home
decor with a truly unique Shokay throw.  We hope that you enjoy our initial line of scarves and
throws this winter!

At Shokay, we strive to bring forth a fresh and stylish fabric to the world in a socially conscious
manner. We aim to source our yak fiber directly from herders in Western China, enabling them to
earn a sustainable living while preserving their traditional lifestyle. We believe in investing and
reinvesting our success into the local communities to ensure the opportunity of choice for future
generations. To view the monthly update of the Shokay story, visit  the Behind the Seams section
of our web site.

Weave Shokay into your world.

Sincerely,
The Shokay Family

A Day in the Life

So I have finally made the move to Shanghai. I wouldn't say that I have settled down yet, as I've only been here for two weeks, and have been busy setting up my apartment, setting up my warehouse, and working.

I'm looking forward to hanging out with friends, having a life beyond my yaks, and having a work/life balance. Yet truth be told, I'm still going to be traveling a lot in the next three months (HK and Taipei in December, and US in January - February), so I won't really have the opportunity to meet people and get to know the city until after Chinese New Year.

A lot of people have been asking me lately what my daily schedule looks like now. It truly is different every day. Some days I'm running around procuring stuff: tissue paper, labels, ladder, safety pins, etc. etc -- this is not an easy task for a newcomer! I mean, where do I go to buy 4000 little gold safety pins that are size 0? (and first I have to figure out that the size I want is actually called a size 0). Or where do I go to buy 1000 pieces of white tissue paper and 1000 pieces of beige tissue paper? What about plain sheets of paper that can be made into labels? Then I have to go around to get 2000 stickers made that have a gold finish.... and along with that, custom make envelopes and boxes. And of course, since this is China, you have to bargain on everything. All this to get ready for the launch of our online website next week.

I am crossing my fingers and toes that everything will fall into place!!

Move of Yak Blog

Our yak blog has moved to a new location so that it is now password protected! (due to confidentiality issues of a start-up). We would still love to have our friends and family read our updates, so please send me an email at carol@venturesindevelopment.com so that I can email you the password and login. (I will be in remote areas for the next 2 weeks, so I may not be able to get back to you right away!)

New site:

On another note, latest news is that our team is now a finalist in an international business plan competition... in September, we will be flying out to the Netherlands for the final rounds. =)

Graduation, China, and YAKS!

I am officially done with my two years at Harvard! Right now I'm trekking through China working on my yak social enterprise to bring high quality yak fiber to the US and also yak cheese. So far so good! For details on the yak project, check out our project blog: http://yaks4d.blogspot.com

Some graduation pictures.... (a special shout out to my amazing bro who took my graduation pictures, helped me pack/move, and deal with all the other craziness that was going on in my life...)
